What will I learn in English Functional Skills?

English Functional Skills provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across the three subject skill areas; speaking and listening, reading, and writing. The study of English can broaden your skills and confidence, allowing you to develop skills that help you to get on in every day life.

Functional Skills qualifications are taught from Entry Level up to Level 2.

You will learn to write concisely and with clarity and will apply this knowledge to a number of practical writing tasks, such as article and letter writing.

You will study alongside like-minded people in classes delivered by friendly supportive tutors.

Is there an exam for English Functional Skills?

Yes. In order to achieve your qualification there is an exam you must complete.

However, you do not have to sit the exam until you and your tutor are confident you will achieve. Full support is available for learners with additional needs, such as dyslexia.

Do I need any qualifications to do this course?

You don’t need any prior qualifications to enrol on English Functional Skills.

We do ask that you complete an initial assessment with ILT Community College when you enrol so that we can understand the level you are currently working to. We do not ask learners to enrol on a course that is above or below their learning ability.
